  1. under The Physical Setting, Benchmark #4 under Processes that Shape the Earth

Standards: students must be able to…

  1. Although weathered rock is the basic component of soil, the composition and texture of soil and its fertility and resistance to erosion are greatly influenced by plant roots and debris, bacteria, fungi, worms, insects, rodents, and other organisms.
-Sample soils in different places in the school yard (core sample, dig a pit, etc., using the same size sample in each area) and compare with other sites in state by partnering with one or more distant schools. Have students relate surface appearance to soil structure, texture, moisture, and color. Take two pans of soil (large rectangular size), one with grass, planted or turf, one just with soil. Place at an incline and sprinkle water on the top of each pan. Watch for erosion.
-Students indicate an understanding of the relationship between soil constituents and fertility, erosion, etc. They can describe how the organisms they find affect the soil.
-Show students a picture of a particular environment and have them predict what the soil below would look like.
