-describe and compare soils by color and texture

2. describe where Earth materials are found

-observe Earth materials around the playground, on a field trip, in their own yard

 

Third - Fourth:

1.-3. under standard #4 (Earth and Space science), under benchmark #1 (students will develop an understanding of the properties of Earth materials)
4. under standard #4 (Earth and Space science), under benchmark #3 (students will develop skills necessary to describe changes in the Earth and weather)

Standards: students must be able to…

  1. observe and classify a variety of Earth materials in their environment
    -observe and classify rock, soil, sand, and water
  2. collect, observe, and become aware of properties of various Earth materials
    -bring in samples of Earth materials from their surroundings to observe color, texture, and other physical properties
  3. experiment with a variety of soils
    -plant seeds in a variety of soils to compare and collect data on the effect of different soils on plant growth. Experiment with soil samples and how they react to water, wind, compaction, etc.
  4. describe changes in the surface of the Earth
    -observe erosion and changes in plant growth at a study site

 

Fifth - Eighth:

1.-2. under standard #4 (Earth and Space science), under benchmark #1 (students will understand that the structure of the Earth system is constantly changing due to the Earth’s physical and chemical processes)

Standards: students must be able to…

1. identify properties of the solid Earth, the oceans and fresh water, and the atmosphere

-create a concept map of Earth materials using links to show connections, such as water causing erosion of solid, wind evaporating water, etc.
-classify rocks, minerals, and soil by properties

2. understand water’s major role in changing the solid surface of the Earth, such as the effect of oceans on climates and water as an erosion force

-model top soil erosion
-measure sediment load in a nearby stream
