Terri Hollarn, from the Marlow Middle School Science Department in Marlow, Oklahoma sent in this wonderful soil profile from their GLOBE Atmosphere site. Here's what she wrote about their experience. The eighth graders at Marlow really enjoyed doing this last Spring. We were all skeptical about the results before we started. It was amazing to actually see the different layers and changes in our soil. One student asked when I started teaching math as we did soil particle size. What a great way for them to apply the math and science they have been learning. The agriculture teacher wants to bring his land and pasture team next time we do this!
Yes, their soil is really that red. Can you think of a reason that soil might be this red? After you've given it some thought, and you think you know the answer, click here. If you have taken a photograph of your soil and you would like to tell a Tale From the Pit, please send it to us at globe@ltpmail.gsfc.nasa.gov or care of: Dr. Elissa Levine |
